Anglia Suspends 2010 Dispensing Courses

Degree courses in ophthalmic dispensing and optical management have been suspended at Anglia Ruskin University as a result of the government's capping of student admissions.

With the applications process for places on its 2010 academic courses, including the two bachelor of science degree courses, already under way, the

University was given its admissions figures and told it would be fined heavily if it exceeded them. As a result of these circumstances, the University was obliged to undertake a major review of its course portfolio and to discontinue some of its least popular courses. Ophthalmic dispensing and optical management were two of over 100 courses that were either discontinued or suspended.

Dr John Siderov, head of the University's department of vision and hearing sciences, said that it was meeting the challenges by updating its courses. 'As part of this process of review, we decided to suspend our intake into our full-time degree courses in ophthalmic dispensing for September 2010.' He said the small number of potential students affected have been advised and offered alternatives.

Siderov also revealed there were plans to reinstate the optical dispensing course for the next academic year: 'We plan to come back bigger and better in 2011.' He added: 'We are committed to developing all of our professional courses including ophthalmic dispensing and will have much more to offer students, employers and the profession in the future.'

Restrictions imposed by the previous government mean England's university budgets are being cut by £449m, according to the BBC.
