AOP Student Conference 2010

student AOP

The AOP National Student Conference is now in its third year and we at Resourcing are looking forward to being at what has always been a well planned and enjoyable weekend. As we are now affiliated with the AOP as their recommended supplier of recruitment services, we will be on hand to answer any and all questions at the conference, as well as provide a presentation on what to expect in the career market upon qualifying and what pitfalls to avoid. We have in the past covered topics such as CV writing and interview technique, whilst our consultant still kept it interesting by utilising his professional beatbox skills to deliver it- so you can always expect the AOP Student Conference to be an entertaining, creative as well as informative event

This year, the students can look forward to a weekend of up-to-date career advice, meeting potential employers, networking, as well as having fun. The conference opens on November 26 and will be held at Centre Parcs near Nottingham where students will be able to sample the delights of Centre Parcs' Tropical Dome, a pleasant respite from the average British winter.

This popular event drew students from optometry departments across the UK last year and Ellen Fletcher, a third-year student at Cardiff University, became a roving reporter for the weekend:

"A shocking display of brilliance was witnessed at the annual AOP Student Eye Opener conference," she wrote. "Students were treated to an innovative lecture from optometrist Brian Tompkins, which involved eye-friendly cocktails, air kissing and stripping (yes-stripping!). There was, however, a serious contact lens topic underlying all of the frivolity, though one was left with the thought that if anyone knows how to appeal to students, it's Mr Tompkins. My impression is that the previous year's success was carried forward and improved upon."

Another student fan said: "The weekend was well worth the money - I met some interesting people and had so much fun. It also really helped me figure out what I want to do once I qualify. I highly recommend it." Indeed, this seems to be the general consensus of the entire conference.

Speaking about this year's conference, AOP education advisor, Karen Sparrow, said: "We are always looking at new and dynamic ways to support students so the 2010 programme will be even better and there will be more time to enjoy yourself as we are kicking off on the Friday night for all students."

Bookings open soon and more details are available through Student AOP on Facebook, Twitter and the Student section of www.aop.org.uk . You can watch the highlights of last year's conference on OT-tv at http://www.optometrytoday.tv and click on features.
