Essex Eye Tests Cancelled for Thousands of Diabetic Patients

Eye tests on thousands of diabetic patients in the south-east have been halted after the methodology of the assessment was brought into question.

Wendy Tankard, director of Clinical Quality at NHS North East Essex, told Optometry Today that around 3,800 tests had been carried out in Colchester and Tendring despite the possibility that the images would prove inaccurate.

"No screening is 100 per cent accurate. We are, however, reviewing a significant number of images to reassure ourselves that they have been handled correctly," she added.
"We want to be absolutely certain that the service is the best it can be, rather than rushing to restart."


She went on to say that although this may prove frustrating for some patients, the assessment team is working as hard as possible to ensure that the eye tests are as good as they can be when they are brought back online.
