Manchester's Heroes in Health

NHS Manchester Heroes in Health have recognised a local initiative for Ocular Hypertension as winners of their 'Partnership of the Year' award. The annual awards for NHS Manchester staff recognises the efforts of employees who deliver high quality health services within the area.

Goldmann tonometry

The OHT scheme was established by Manchester LOC and Manchester Royal Eye Hospital with backing from Manchester PCT's optometry commissioning team. Both bodies were praised for their role in the training and accreditation process involved in the scheme which has helped significantly reduce the number of patients being referred to hospital.

In May more than 60 optometrists from across Manchester became accredited for the scheme and have launched the service within the practices where they work. Optometrists who took part in the scheme gave the feedback that they found the new challenge of becoming accredited in Goldmann tonometry a highly enjoyable process- with increased interaction with their hospital colleagues and the practical sessions involved- a team effort that further adds to the fantastic working relationship that has developed between Manchester LOC and the PCT body.
