New Codes of Conduct: what to expect from your
optician
The General Optical Council (GOC) is holding an event on 16
February to discuss implications of the new Code of Conduct for
Individual Registrants, and what patients can expect when they
visit their optician.
All those with an interest in how the new Codes of Conduct will
work in practice are invited to attend, particularly: patients, the
public, employers and other healthcare regulators.

Time and venue:
- 16 February: 16:30 - 18:00
- Park Crescent Conference Centre, 229 Great Portland Street,
London, W1W 5PN.
- The event will follow the GOC's stakeholder consultation
session on revalidation. The revalidation session takes place at
the same venue, from: [insert time].Full details are available from
www.optical.org . Delegates are welcome to attend both consultation
events.
The revised Code of Conduct comes into effect on 1 April, and
describes the key principles of good practice and professional
conduct to which all UK opticians must adhere. If a registrant
fails to comply with the duties and responsibilities set out in the
Code, they are putting their registration at risk.
Following a consultation last year, the GOC updated the Code to
include major changes such as:
- All registrants have an obligation to report any concerns they
have about themselves, or a colleague, that they may not be fit to
practise;
- Making it clearer that it is not merely inappropriate conduct
in a person's professional life which may put their registration at
risk, but also their personal conduct whilst not practising;
and
- Registrants need to be aware of and comply with guidance on the
issue of patient consent.
The event is free to attend but space is limited, so delegates
are advised to register their interest in advance.
You can register your interest online on the GOC website
or contact Simon Grier on 020 7307 3478 or
