Research to help those with impaired vision praised

Researchers have discovered that the use of stem cells may be
able to help treat people with impaired vision due to corneal
scarring.
The University of Cincinnati team found that human umbilical cord
mesenchymal stem cells restored the transparency of cloudy and thin
corneas.
Richard Tolson, service development manager for Health and Social
Care at Action for Blind People, supported the research and urged
people to get their eyes tested every two years, unless advised by
their optician to do otherwise.
He said: "Over half of all sight loss is due to preventable or
treatable causes. With an estimated two million blind and partially
sighted people living in the UK, this means that a million people
are currently living with sight loss that could have been
prevented."
New imaging technology is being used to diagnose eye problems
early and therefore maximise the effectiveness of treatment, the
Des Moines Register recently revealed.
