Continuing Education and Trainning - CET
It is essential that eye care practitioners maintain the up to
date skills and knowledge needed to practise safely and effectively
throughout their career. To ensure this, the GOC oversees a mandatory
CET scheme.
CET is a statutory requirement for all fully-qualified
optometrists and dispensing opticians. The CET scheme is a
points-based scheme that runs over a three-year cycle. All full
registrants must earn a minimum number of CET points by the end of
each cycle to stay on the registers.
Registrants can manage their CET portfolio,
and maintain a record of their completed CET points, at the
dedicated CET website, www.cetoptics.com. The
website is run by Vantage Technologies, who
administer the CET Scheme on behalf of the GOC.
How the scheme works
The current CET cycle runs from 1 January 2007 to 31
December 2009. Full registrants need to earn and confirm the
required number of CET points by 31 December 2009 to be eligible to
renew their registration in 2010. Registrants have to earn their
points by completing CET. CET is available through a variety of
modalities to suit the individuals needs and learning styles. Once
the points are earned the registrant must then confirm them on
the cetoptics website.
How are the points calculated?
The points are calculated on a pro rata basis
and each registrant must obtain one general point for every
full month they have been on the GOC register; and if on a specialty register,
obtain one point for every full two months that they have been
on a specialty register; up to a maximum of 36 general
point and 18 specialty points.
