Leightons is a family owned business, established in 1928 by the father of the current chairman. The first practice was in Southampton and focused on providing a highly personalised service. The continued to successfully expand across the South East and now have 36 stores, but still hold the same values as they did in 1928.

There is a strong focus on providing excellent personal service, employing professional, qualified staff to give the best level of care to every patient. New staff are encouraged to become part of the Leightons family. Friendly, and understanding attitude; seek to support local communities wherever possible. There is a balanced need for commercial awareness, as the optometrist should be mindful of how their recommendations affect the business, and the practice.

Leightons is going through an ongoing refit program to update the equipment in all of their stores.  All stores are now equipped with fundus cameras, some also have AMD screening, and colourimetry.

Ongoing training is provided both by internal training manager, and external experts brought in to speak on certain topics. Professional services manager who is an optometrist and is responsible for training and developing other optoms. He would also be your first point of call for any help you needed, on clinical issues.

All Leightons branches are managed by qualified DOs. No staff within practice that dispense, are unqualified, all are DOs. The company encourages variation in your role, training other staff members, getting involved with the professional services manager, piloting new clinical products, etc…the options are there.

Leightons create a unique working environment, which is very different to high street multiples.  There are no late shifts, no working on Sundays no 20 minute tests. However like a large multiple Leightons offer strong employment benefits and training.
